NATTERGAL (a/k/a Näktergal; Satakieli)

Nattergal is a small group of San Francisco Bay Area musicians who play and sing Scandinavian folk music: primarily dance tunes (both gammaldans and bygdedans), with some music just for listening.  Nattergal’s repertoire is drawn mainly from traditional Scandinavian sources but also includes original compositions by members of the group and unique arrangements and harmonies.  Instrumentation includes fiddle, accordion, cittra, guitar, hardingfele, recorder, and munnharpe, with vocals in Norwegian, Swedish, Finnish, Icelandic, and Danish.  Members of this group have been performing folk music for several years in the San Francisco area, as well as other areas of the United States and Scandinavia.

Nattergal’s previous performances include the Lutheran Church Fall Festival in Felton, the Skandia Folke Musik Festival at Solvang, the Kolo Festival in San Jose, the Finnish-American Society’s Vappu Juhla in San Jose, Sweden in Bloom Festivals in San Mateo and Palo Alto, Skandifest in Turlock, the City of Rocklin Jubilee, Scandinavian Festival in Sacramento, the Northwest Folklife Festival in Seattle, the City of Foster City Recreation Department Concert Series, the Bing Music Series concerts at Stanford Hospital, Norway Day in San Francisco, and the IKEA store opening in East Palo Alto.

Musicians include:

Annie Kanerva (vocals, cittra, guitar, recorder)
Sarah Kirton (fiddle, hardingfele, vocals, recorder, munnharpe)
     Åsa Norrlid Rehnström (vocals, fiddle)
